Rodney Takahashi was born and raised in Hawaii, on the island of Oahu. Rodney was taught under the direction of the well known Roy Sakuma Studios. Today Rodney has his own little studio in the heart of San Jose's Japan Town. There he teaches with hopes and dreams that the art of playing the ukulele will carry on. "The best feeling an instructor can have is when you hear them play something you've taught." I am truely blessed to have such great and talented students. Thank you all for making Ukulele Jams what it is today.
Ukulele Jams has been around since January 2005. We are located in the well known community of Japan Town right here in San Jose, CA. Ukulele Jams will teach you music theory as well as how to pick and strum your favorite songs. Students learn to play from the heart in a fun environment. Ukulele Jams performs at various festivals and community events. We also play for parties and special occasions.
My dream was to open up an ukulele studio, as inspired by Roy Sakuma. In 2005, that dream became a reality when I started teaching my first 4 students out of my 1 bedroom condo. Today, Ukulele Jams has grown to over 100 students . We are now in the planning stage of the first annual San Jose Ukulele Festival in 2011. Check back for details as they become available.

Tuning the Ukulele can be tricky. They have several different ways to tune the Ukulele. The strings are tuned to the notes G C E and A on the piano. When holding the ukulele, the G string being the string closes to you, and the A string being the farthest string away from you. You can tune it using your ear and matching the pitch as best as you can. You would listen for a wave between the piano or instrument you are tuning to, and the ukulele. The farther the wave length, the closer it is to be in tune. The closer the wave length the farther it is away from being in tune. They also have several different types of electronic tuners available. On the left are examples of what the strings should be tuned to. Press the play button and listen to the notes. Then play it again and try to match them.
